Wedding Bells…

wedding_bells

My 2008 wedding season has officially ended! I shot my last wedding of the year a few weeks ago and am feeling like I’m just now catching my breath. This has been such an awesome year for me, the best one yet. I shot some amazing weddings, met so many great people, and even photographed a destination wedding in the mountains of Western Pennsylvania! I don’t know how, but I luck out time and time again with the most fabulous clients. I am truly blessed.

I’m currently booking weddings for 2009 and am beyond excited for what is shaping up to look like another great season. My big goal for 2009 is to book more destination weddings. I absolutely love traveling and shooting in new places and would love to see more of the country or world this year. If you know anyone who is planning on tying the knot in ’09, whether it is local or far flung, feel free to pass on this blog or my website. Who knows? We just may be a perfect match!

Speaking of my website, I’ve updated my homepage with some fun new shots from the last few months. Check it out HERE and let me know what you think!

Mary and her Kids {Santa Cruz Relaxed Family Portraits/ Seabright Beach Family Portraits}

It was almost exactly three years ago when we had our first family portrait session. Pat and I, with our one-year-old in tow, headed to one of the most gorgeous beaches in California for what was perhaps one of the most uncomfortable hours we’ve ever spent on the beach, ever. As we all sat like mannequins and offered our cheesiest smiles, I kept glancing over at the family next to us. Glancing longingly that is. They were running around on the beach, swatting each other with kelp, and laughing from their guts. You know, the kind of laugh that makes you gasp for your next breath. Forget longing, I was flat out jealous.

At this point my portrait business was a pipe dream and not much more, but as it was born and began to grow, I never forgot the feeling that I had that evening as the sun was setting over the cliffs. Now do not get me wrong, the images turned out very nice. My in-laws have them in frames in their living room and all is well.

The only problem is that the memory of the experience itself was tainted for both Pat and myself. Although the beach is our second home, this particular experience made us feel trapped and uneasy. When I started planting the seeds for my portrait business, I vowed to never do this to anyone. It is so funny, the way that unpleasant experiences can offer us the most clarity and vision. Fast forward three years and my portrait business is blossoming into something very much my own. So, if you and I ever meet on the beach…please…run yourself silly, fling kelp to your heart’s content, and by all means, laugh until your gut is sore!

I am reminded of this story because as I sit here and upload images from last week’s session on Seabright Beach, I am realizing that this session embodies exactly what I want my clients to be during their sessions: Themselves!

And now onto the Fabulous Mary and her amazing children…

Big props to Mary’s daughter, who came to the session after a slumber party. 5th grade slumber party attendees aren’t exactly known for their performance the next day, but she did really well!blog10

I just love this series:

I don’t blame her a bit, I wanted to eat him up too!

I always try to make beach portraits look unique and not like every other beach session out there…

I forgot to mention that Mary is my awesome hair stylist. Give her a call at Azhar in Downtown Santa Cruz, she is THE BEST! (831) 426-6334

Both kids were big proponents of their own individual photos and had very strong opinions regarding exactly where they should be taken, which I just loved! Turns out, they both had amazing visions.

Thank you, Mary and dear little ones for lighting up my evening with your infectious smiles. What an honor it was to document your love and your sincere joy in being together. With Much Love, Jo Ann

Another Family Portrait Session {Vasona Park-Los Gatos, CA}

My friend Julie has a friend named Julie. Well, Julie told Julie and here we are. The best part of a word of mouth business is that I always find myself photographing people who I could easily be friends with myself. I love this! Julie wanted her family portraits to be fun and full of life, which was music to my ears. It meant that I was free to capture the good stuff…

Both boys are so beautiful, just look at those eyes…

As per usual during a family session with small children, Mom and Dad were working hard. I’m pretty sure that this is the only moment of rest that they had.

Big brother was a hoot!

And so was little brother! I think that Julie has the most gorgeous smile.

The day was pretty overcast with the occasional hazy glow. At one point, the sun peeked out and it began to drizzle. I just love the quality of light in the next few images. And yes, they’re observing a rainbow in case you were wondering.10

I just loved this child’s sense of wonder and curiosity. Here he is studying a ladybug with dad.13

And then the whole family got in on the action…

This one may be my favorite family shot of the day.19

Julie and family, thank you so much for the lovely afternoon. I loved meeting you and being able to observe your family in action. Thanks also for introducing me to Vasona Park and all of its beauty. And I can’t forget to thank the “other” Julie for being so fabulous! Much Love, Jo Ann
